Welcome!

Welcome to the 2013 Jamboree Shakedown
Firestone Scout Reservation Brea, CA May 3rd - 5th, 2013

The mission of the 2013 Jamboree Shakedown weekend is to provide a fun training experience for Troops and Venture Crews in preparation for the Jamboree experience. This weekend is a great time to meet the Scouts & Scouters from Orange County and Los Angeles, who are going to the 2013 National Jamboree.

The Shakedown event will be an important opportunity to check out your gear, test the leadership in your Unit, and compare notes about new ways of preparing for the first National Jamboree at The Summit.

It is an opportunity to get your campsite set up Jamboree style, participate in a Conservation Service Project, test the zip line and rock climbing walls, participate in Team-Building Games, get introductions to Merit Badges at the Merit Badge Midway, sign-up for the Venture and Scout Ranges, sing and yell at the Spirit Booth, enjoy a variety of Unit & Patrol activities, be blown away at the Saturday night Arena Show, and be reverent at the Interfaith Worship Service. Finally, before packing up camp, we will gather our 12 Units in front of the Albertson’s refrigerated trailer, looking sharp in our field uniforms, for a campwide 2013 Shakedown photo.
The Shakedown training weekend should:
  • Help the youth get to know one another.
  • Emphasize the place of the Scout Oath and Scout Law at Shakedown and Jamboree.
  • Provide the opportunity for units to organize, practice the Patrol Method in their leadership roles & tasks, and
  • manage their schedule of weekend activities.
  • Create team-building games and activities for the youth.
  • Provide the opportunity for units to organize and practice using all of the unit equipment • Practice jamboree-style camping and cooking skills.
  • Review Summit hazards (wildlife, plants, terrain, etc.) and basic safety procedures

With this Shakedown event, you will be able to note the strengths of your Unit, as well as areas that need adjustment before you are far from home. Remember - 2013 is the first year that Crew and Troop units together participate at Shakedown and Jamboree. It is our number one goal to achieve a safe training event that is FUN.

This weekend will be a learning experience for all of us, and an important opportunity to share new experiences in preparation for what is to come at the 2013 National Jamboree. Most importantly it is the ideal time to make the difference in the overall quality of the Jamboree experience for everyone. This is, after all, an adventure offering real and profound life experiences!

Angie Velazquez, Allen Barr, Ernest Stuart and I have been enjoying the challenges of organizing a big event, and enjoying seeing it come together. On behalf of the 2013 Shakedown Committee, 2013 Jamboree Leaders & Staff, we wish to offer our sincerest thanks to all those who have volunteered to organize and run this year’s Jamboree Shakedown training event.

Yours in Scouting,
Kimberly Stuart
